The Monolith
The Monolith
Description
And then there came a sound which Moon-Watcher could not possibly have identified, for it had never been heard before in the history of the world. It was the clank of metal upon stone.
Arther C. Clarke, 2001 A Space Odyssey
Scent: Strawberry (light)
Texture: Coated clear
Book Context
2001 - A Space Odyssey tells the story of mysterious monoliths that are placed by an unknown alien species throughout time and space to investigate far off civilization and encourage the development of intelligent life. These monoliths are tall, imposing, and emit noise and light.
Notes on Texture
This coated clear slime represents the monolith in its various book descriptions as both almost completely transparent and as pitch black. It is packed with black glitters that flash with wild colors, reminiscent of the climax of the movie version of the book, when Dave is transported through time and space in wild swirl of color and light.
Notes on Scent
In 2009, astronomers identified the chemical ethyl formate in a dust cloud at the center of the Milky Way. Ethyl formate happens to be responsible for the flavor of raspberries (source). As I didn't have any raspberry scent on hand, I used strawberry to evoke the smell of space.
