Description

On a china plate on the kitchen table was a spool of black cotton, and a long silver needle, and, beside them, two large black buttons.

Book Context
In Coraline's family's new flat there is a mysterious locked door that seemingly leads to nowhere.  One day when she is left alone, Coraline gets the key and opens the door only to discover it now opens on a dark corridor, and at the other end, a nearly exact replica of her old flat and her parents.  In the climactic scene of the book, Coraline is in the dark corridor attempting to close it while the Other Mother tries to open it from the other side - aided by the strength of the spirits she has freed, she is able to shut the door.

Notes on Texture
The shifting colors of the slime are for the deep magic that runs through the corridor, and the ethereal friends helping Coraline.  The black buttons are the gift offered by her Other Parents that would tie Coraline to the Other World forever.

Notes on Scent
I wanted to evoke the duality of the other world the Other Mother creates - there is familiarity, sweetness, and comfort, but also something wrong lurking underneath.  The blood orange has the sweetness with a slight tang, and the coriander lends its a unique undertone.

Notes on the Book Cover
I was inspired by the original 2002 book cover designed by Dave McKean, but also wanted to have more of the story elements depicted.  This is the most I've ever hand drawn for a Library of Slime book cover! This is a scene directly from the book, when Coraline (wearing her blue dressing gown and T-shirt) picks up the cat and holds him " She supported its bottom with one hand, rested its front legs on her shoulders."
